Mommies get fit
American Fitness, March-April, 1997
The latest in fitness attire is, would you believe...pajamas? New mommies are toning up and shedding pregnancy weight with the "Pajama Jam 10-Minute Shape-Up" from MommyFit: Home-based Personal Training for Women. "Busy moms can quickly tone arms, legs, hips and abdominals while the kids are chomping on Cherrios," says Pam Skinner, personal trainer and owner of MommyFit. "It's quick and easy, and no special clothing is required. So, there is no excuse not to work out!"

Included in Skinner's "Get Fit Starter Kit" is the Pajama Jam video, along with a Seven-Day High Energy Meal Plan and JumpStart Motivational Program. Moms learn "secret fitness tips" including how to tone leg muscles in less than two minutes three times a week and where to buy a resistance band for 15 cents. "The more muscle you have, the higher your metabolism and the ability for your body to burn off excess fat," says Skinner. "Weight training is the secret to keeping the weight off."
Skinner found herself carrying 45 extra pounds after her son Brian was born, and was motivated to support other new moms in getting back to pre-pregnancy shape. "I wanted to help them reclaim their bodies," she says. "It's weird to look in the mirror and still look like you have a volleyball in your stomach."
MommyFit began with a few clients who were close friends of Skinner. "I saw them get results, and their attitudes changed dramatically," says Skinner. But she doesn't promise instant results. "It may take six to eight weeks to see improvements," she says. "It takes commitment."
Skinner's diet plan includes cutting out red meat, and lowering fat and calorie content. But she believes everyone has the right to indulge now and then. "My indulgence is cheese and an occasional glass of wine," she says.
She also urges clients to pamper themselves with an active lifestyle. "Make fitness a top priority," says Skinner. "Believe you deserve it, and go for it."
