Rating the clubs: a health and fitness center consumer checklist

American Fitness,  Sept-Oct, 1994  by Bradley J. Cardinal

Public interest in health and fitness continues to increase. Unfortunately, people know little about how to select the right health and fitness center. This is evidenced by high drop-out rates observed in most facilities. The solution? Learn the important characteristics to be considered before joining a fitness program.

Based on research and experience in the health and fitness industry, a yes-no checklist consisting of 37 items was developed to help the public evaluate health and fitness centers in order to make informed decisions.

It should be noted that this checklist has not been standardized, and there is no set score that assures facility excellence. Rather, the checklist identifies program features available in the industry and allows individuals to rate each component for themselves. Health and fitness centers receiving a high number of "no" checks should probably be avoided. Those receiving more "yes" checks should be given the highest consideration. However, if a program has a lot of "yes" checks, but certain "no" checks hold more meaning for you, you may have to sacrifice a program with more overall features for one with fewer (but more important) features based on personal interests and needs. Though choosing a specific center is subjective, people who use the checklist should feel more confident in their decision and, as a result, experience greater program satisfaction.

In addition, it is a good idea to discuss the health and fitness centers you are considering with current or past members. This may provide additional insight into whether the program is right for you.
