AFAA launches "Your Body" national seminars - Aerobics and Fitness Association of America - body fat analyzer
American Fitness, Sept-Oct, 1997
"Go for the percent -- not the pounds!" For years, fitness professionals have been telling people to stop worrying about the number on the scale and concentrate on building lean muscle. Focusing on body composition -- your body's proportion of fat to muscle -- is the ideal means of healthy weight management. But, up to now, it's been a rather unpleasant experience to have your body fat measured. Either you're pinched by skin calipers, dunked under water or strapped to a tape measure in public.

Now there's a new way to measure your body composition that is not only fun, easy and affordable, but can be done n the privacy of your own home. A new agreement between the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) and Omron Healthcare, Inc., manufacturer of the Body Logic[TM], was announced last August, allowing AFAA certified fitness instructors to instruct clients in the use of the first hand-held fat analyzer of its kind. AFAA will be conducting a national series of seminars for fitness professional and enthusiasts to help people understand that the optimum way to manage their weight is through regular exercise and sensible eating.
The Body Logic[TM] is the first retail product to receive a seal of approval from AFAA. "We're delighted to have this opportunity with Omron Healthcare," says AFAA president Linda D. Pfeffer, R.N. "It's one more way in which AFAA has truly bridged the gap between fitness and health care for instructors."
The seminars will be developed by AFAA's national advisory board, in compliance with AFP Fitness Practitioner[R] counseling guidelines. "Now that the Body Logic[TM] helps users monitor body fat, they can expect to reduce their risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and other conditions commonly associated with excess body fat," states seminar developer Laura Gladwin, M.S.
The Body Logic[TM] tests each user's fat quotient with the press of a button using the bioelectrical impedance analysis method of measuring the body's resistance to a weak electrical current. Each reading takes just seven seconds, and the unit goes wherever you go -- to the health club, a client's house, your private workout room, or even on a business trip or vacation. List price is $99. A deluxe $149 model for fitness trainers, called Body Logic Pro[TM], will be available through AFAA.

Starting in 1998, AFAA rolls out its national debut of corporate-affiliated public fitness seminars, with an expanded version available at APEX '98. But a sneak preview is available at the Health and Fitness Expo in Pomona, California at the Sheraton Suites on October 4, 1997. Part of AFAA's new consumer initiative, the "YOUR BODY[TM]" seminars are all linked by a common message -- the more you learn about your body, the more you can enjoy a healthy, active and fit life. The free seminars, which are open to both the public and fitness professionals, are AFAA's next step in building a bridge between health care and fitness for its certified instructors.
Each of the three-hour seminars will feature the latest health and fitness information, packaged along with AFAA-approved equipment from leading manufacturers in the health industry. The first YOUR BODY[TM] seminar teaches an enjoyable way to trim body fat, using the new Body Logic[TM] fat analyzer from Omron Healthcare, Inc. Future topics in the forthcoming series will cover such conditions as diabetes and hypertension, and will also be linked to innovative products intended to give people greater control and a healthier outlook.
The first hour of the program is intended for consumers and professional instructors. Attendees will learn how body fat effects health and longevity, along with the best means for measuring and managing fat and lean muscle composition. The next two hours are intended for professional study only, with continuing education units granted to certified instructors.
