Nissan's first entry into the compact crossover SUV market, the new-for-2008 Rogue, is built for those who want a more enthusiastic driving experience than the usual box-on-wheels affords. It's both practical and stylish, with a broad-shouldered exterior highlighted by a bold front-end treatment with upswept headlamps.
The Rogue is available in S and SL versions, and both come powered by a 170-horse-power, 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine that's teamed with a CVT (continuously variable transmission) for lively acceleration with admirable economy--22 mpg city/27 highway. Although it works via belts and pulleys rather than gears, the CVT includes steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters for quasi-manual operation.
An available Intuitive all-wheel-drive system ensures stable launches and secure handling on both wet and dry roads. Electronic power steering and a four-wheel independent suspension further contribute to the Rogue's surprisingly tenacious cornering abilities. Vehicle Dynamic Control with Traction Control and antilock disc brakes with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and Brake Assist are included for safety's sake, as are front-side and side-curtain airbags and front Active Head Restraints to reduce whiplash injuries.
Interesting touches include a fold-flat passenger's seat to accommodate long cargo items, an oversized glove box, a dual-level center console and a one-touch foldable cargo organizer.
