5 things you should know about … yogurt

Muscle & Fitness, July, 2006

Before you decide on your next dairy purchase, read the latest on this culture classic.

1 * Per cup, yogurt contains at least 25% more calcium than milk; however, most yogurts aren't Vitamin D-fortified.

2 * To keep saturated fat levels in check, choose a yogurt that contains less than 3% milk fat. Not all yogurts are created equal.

3 * Plain yogurt contains approximately 10-14 grams of high-quality protein per 8 ounces. That's 20% more protein than the same volume of milk.

4 * Bacteria in yogurt digest lactose, making yogurt easier on the stomach than other dairy products. The same bacteria are also believed to combat bad breath, dental plaque and gingivitis.

5 * A cup of fruit-on-the-bottom yogurt can have up to 6 teaspoons of sugar (more than a cup of chocolate milk). The best nutritional deal is plain yogurt, which contains only live cultures and milk.--M.K.
