Free-range eggs

Muscle & Fitness, August, 2006 by Matthew Kadey

Q: Is it worth the extra money to buy free-range eggs?

A: Free-range eggs aren't all they're cracked up to be. The USDA allows producers to use this term if their hens have access to the outdoors, but the ease of this access and the amount of time spent outside is unregulated. And range can mean anything from a large grassy field to a concrete slab. To learn the specifics, you need to ask the farmers directly about their individual practices. Bottom line: Don't assume free-range eggs are worth your extra green.
