45 Years WOW!

Accent on Living,  Summer, 2000

When Julie asked if had any suggestions for the summer issue editorial topic, my reply was something like, "It's curious you should ask. I've had several disconnected, yet related thoughts that might be appropriate, but I haven't been able to string them together."

I went on to the tasks at hand, still preoccupied with those thoughts. The following day, while flying to Edison, NJ, to attend the Abilities Expo, I started to jot down some notes. Here goes...

The Summer 2000 issue begins ACCENT's 45th year of publication. What dramatic changes have taken place -- for the disabled -- for everyone -- in those 45 years. Think of progress, awareness, products, information, employment opportunities, on and on.

However, on the down side, there is still a lack of tolerance, cooperation and understanding. We can see this any day in many aspects of our society in general: violence in our schools; controversy over gun control or NRA; road rage; let's sue them; "my rights" come first, my way or no way; walk or accept the wheelchair and move on with life.

Certainly, as a well-established member of the disability press," ACCENT has been and will continue to be an advocate for the many diverse concerns and issues facing all persons with disabilities. But I also remember what Ray always said, "You'll catch more flies with honey than vinegar."

Publishing this magazine for 45 years and earning your respect, is an accomplishment that also comes with responsibility. All of us at ACCENT are committed to being a positive influence while full-well realizing the written word is powerful and lasting.

There is a high level of integrity in ACCENT which we trust translates into reassurance to you, our subscribers, that we feel responsible to help effect change and to do so in a kinder, gentler manner while faithfully bringing you valuable information in the wide variety of articles as well as the many fine products and services advertised in each issue.
