In a study of more than 130,000 people, obese men and women were more likely to be diagnosed with cataracts than people of normal weight. Insulin resistance, which is more common in the obese, may contribute to cataracts because it leads to higher levels of sugar in the blood and, possibly, the eye.

What to do: Lose excess weight, and avoid gaining it.
