Glucosamine & Arthritis - list of available clinical trials for arthritis drug - Brief Article

Nutrition Action Healthletter, July, 2001

In May, we said that a new National Institutes of Health (NIH) study called GAIT (Glucosamine/Chondroitin Arthritis Intervention Trial) would use the Cosamin brand ("Quick Studies,' page 9). Not so. The study will use the same glucosamine and chondroitin formulations that are found in Cosamin, the only U.S. brand that contains them. We also printed an incorrect phone number for readers who want to volunteer for the study.

If you're interested in volunteering, you need to: (1) be 40 or older, (2) have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis of the knee, (3) not have any other arthritis-like disease (like gout), (4) not have diabetes, (5) be willing to stop taking glucosamine or chondroitin (if you're currently taking either or both), (6) be willing to take a COX-2 inhibitor drug (like Celebrex or Vioxx), and (7) be willing to travel to one of the centers where the study will take place. The best way to contact the study is by e-mailing the center nearest you. If you can't e-mail, leave a message at (801) 587-9627 (it's in Utah).
