Bacon & blood sugar

Nutrition Action Healthletter, Nov, 2004

Women who ate bacon at least twice a week had a 17 percent higher risk--and those who ate hot dogs that frequently had a 24 percent higher risk--of diabetes than those who ate the meats less than once a week, says a new study that followed more than 37,000 women for nine years.

What to do: It's too early to say whether bacon or hot dogs promotes diabetes. But unless you buy lower-fat brands, the saturated fat in those meats does promote heart disease.
