Happy 35th

Nutrition Action Healthletter, Nov, 2005 by Michael F. Jacobson

Over the last 35 years, the nonprofit Center for Science in the Public Interest has dedicated itself to providing consumers with objective and useful information, watchdogging corporations, and pushing for government policies that promote health.

During that time we have published some 300 issues of our award-winning Nutrition Action Healthletter (still #1 in national popularity) and achieved important victories on behalf of American consumers. Our efforts have changed the behavior of multinational corporations, shaped government policy, and brought Americans safer, more nutritious food.

"CSPI has profoundly altered the way America eats," is the way U.S. News & World Report put it.

As we approach our 35th anniversary, we want to thank you--our subscribers and supporters--for our success!

Every time you pick up a food package and check the Nutrition Facts panel, you can be proud. Without you, CSPI could not have won passage of the historic Nutrition Labeling and Education Act, which put those panels on just about all packaged foods.

Every time you buy organic broccoli or spaghetti sauce, you can be proud. Without you, CSPI could not have championed the federal law that defines organic food.

Every time you see the amount of heart-damaging trans fat listed on a food label (and you'll be seeing it on most labels in the coming months), you can be proud. Without you, we couldn't have persuaded the government to require the mandatory disclosure of trans.

Every time you see a deceptive ad or food label disappear, you can be proud. Without you, our scientists and writers wouldn't be able to expose them and our lawyers wouldn't be able to get them out of the marketplace.

And we're not about to stop. CSPI will continue to oppose anyone and every-one who tries to deceive consumers, market junk foods and unsafe additives, or water down or turn back food-safety protections. We will also continue to push for stronger government food policies.

To ensure our strength today and for decades to come, we need your continuing support. One way to do that: "Planned gifts" to CSPI can generate tax and income benefits to you during your lifetime, while ensuring that you leave a legacy of support for our work. Some gift plans can also provide you and your loved ones with income for life.

To learn more at no obligation, contact CSPI's development office at Suite 300, 1875 Connecticut Ave., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20009 (or giftplan@cspinet.org).

It's been a great 35 years. And with supporters like you behind us, it's just the start.
