How to Find an Osteopathic Physician

Healthfacts, Oct 1, 1998 by Marya Napoli

As with allopathic physicians (M.D.s), osteopathic physicians (D.O.s) must complete four years of medical school, an internship, and, if they become specialists, several years of residency. They can prescribe drugs and perform surgery. But osteopathic physicians learn an important healing technique not included in the allopathic curriculum--a hands-on technique called osteopathic manipulation therapy (BMT).

In osteopathic medicine, the muscle and bones of the body play a significant role in most illnesses. Not all osteopathic physicians use OMT routinely in their practice. For a referral to one who does, call the American Osteopathic Association 1(800)621-1773, ext. 8252. Free brochures explaining osteopathic medicine are also available.
