Tire crumbs

Pediatrics for Parents, April, 2002 by Harry Pellman

Many playgrounds use ground up tires, called "tire crumbs," as a safety surface. The spongy, pliable tire crumbs help to soften the blow when a child falls. There have been concerns that children may be exposed to toxins that are leached from the tire crumbs.

"Many physicians have felt they didn't have enough information to feel confident about advising worried parents," said Dr. Tee L. Guidotti, lead researcher in a study from the University of Alberta, Edmonton.

They analyzed water runoff from tire crumbs. The good news is that they found nothing that poses a threat to children's health.
