Prozac for kids

Pediatrics for Parents, June, 2003 by John E. Monaco

The Food and Drug Administration recently approved the use of Prozac (generic name fluoxetine) for children seven and older with major depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The side effects seen in children are similar to those seen in adults--nausea, tiredness, nervousness, dizziness, and concentration problems.

"The fact that the FDA has approved fluoxetine for use in that population may lead to more children being treated," said Christopher Kratochvil, M.D. of the University of Nebraska Medical Center. "The generic availability of fluoxetine may also provide more access because of reduced cost."
