down on the farm - New magazine by the Humane Society - Brief Article

Vegetarian Times, Sept, 2000

remember Factory Farming 101? We don't either. But a new publication by the Humane Society called Farms as Factories is designed to help teachers broach this emotionally charged issue with high school students. Kids will learn the most recent statistics about factory farming, like the one that caught our attention: More than 8 billion animals are killed for their meat in the United States every year. Complete with writing assignments and discussion questions, this 32-page booklet doesn't soft-pedal the issues, but neither does it employ the type of holier-than-thou tone bound to turn kids off. It gives the plain facts about the chicken, pork and beef industries and explores the environmental and animal cruelty issues inherent to each. The booklet also details the history of animal-welfare laws in the United States and suggests ways students can take political action. Teachers and students can purchase Farms as Factories from the Humane Society for $3 apiece or download it for free by going to www.nahee.org/teenscene.>
