The doctor is out

If your New Year's resolutions include sticking to an exercise regimen, don't ask your family physician for any advice. According to a study published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine (October 2001), of the 1,800 adults interviewed about health and wellness, only 28 percent reported that their doctors counseled them on the importance of physical activity. Of those who received advice, only 38 percent gained their physician's help in devising a specific activity plan, and less than half in that group received follow-up support.
It's important for health care professionals to encourage their patients to exercise to remain in optimum health. The Centers for Disease Control suggests that adults exercise at least 30 minutes five times a week, but few heed this recommendation. In fact, statistics show that 70 percent of Americans aren't even coming close to these guidelines. Experts suggest that this is just one reason why so many Americans are forever battling the bulge.
