Bone appetit

Vegetarian Times,  July, 2002

Want strong bones? Eager to avoid osteoporosis? Drink milk--that's the conventional wisdom, though what we've been told for years is under more scrutiny than ever before. You can obtain all the calcium you require from nondairy sources, and even then your bones may not be getting all the nourishment they need.

The September 2001 issue of Nutrition Research reports that many other nutrients play important roles in healthy bone formation. The herb gingko biloba, according to a study conducted at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, may increase cell-energy levels, leading to greater proliferation of bone cells. Future research may show that gingko supplements "can enhance bone formation." Researchers believe ginkgo is so effective because its antioxidant properties" are similar to those found in vegetables."
