How much is enough? - Scoop: health/fitness/nutrition/diet/supplements/personal care/environment - exercise - Brief Article

Vegetarian Times, Sept, 2003

Moderate exercise is enough to ward off heart disease, right? Maybe not. Results of a study published in the April 2003 issue of the British medical journal Heart challenges this popular notion, reporting that only vigorous exercise--such as jogging, hiking, climbing stairs, racket sports and swimming--will mitigate the risk of fatal cardiovascular illness.

Researchers from Queen's University in Belfast, Northern Ireland, followed 1,975 men for 10 years, concluding that those who performed the most demanding exercises were 40 percent less likely to die prematurely from heart disease than those who practiced moderation.
