"Unless we make a significant alteration in their lifestyles," says Francine Kaufman, MD, president of the American Diabetes Association (ADA), "they will likely progress to a deteriorating course of insulin resistance, pre-diabetes and diabetes." Overweight children should be tested if they have a diabetic parent, show signs of insulin resistance or are of African-American, Hispanic or Native American ethnicity.
