Don't worry, be happy - health / fitness / nutrition / diet / supplements / personal care / environment - folic acid improves mental health - Brief Article

Vegetarian Times,  Nov, 2003

Sufferers from depression are twice as likely to have high blood levels of homocysteine, a normal by-product of metabolism that is ordinarily broken down by the B vitamin folic acid, The findings, based on blood samples of almost 6,000 adults aged 46-49 and published in the June 2003 Archives of General Psychiatry, support the belief that vitamin B is important "not only for physical health, but for mental health as well," says lead researcher Ingvar Bjelland, MD, of Norway's University of Bergen.

Any deficiency seems to impair the body's ability to metabolize homocysteine, resulting in depression.
