Eat and run - Letter to the Editor

Vegetarian Times,  Dec, 2003

As a long-time vegetarian and VT subscriber, I'm sad to say that I was completely disgusted by your article "Fast Food" (September 2003). I couldn't care less if McDonald's cooked up a vegan seitan burger on a whole wheat bun with nayonnaise and organic lettuce and delivered it hot to my house in an eco-friendly hybrid car--I will never eat their food! The author claims that the "ill will" engendered by McDonald's ... "may take some time and effort on McDonald's part to overcome." But for me, putting a dry veggie burger on an over-processed white bun in "some" locations isn't quite good enough. I could go on and on about how the demand for Big Macs contributes to the desertification of Third World countries and how their use of star athletes lures children into their clutches in a country where childhood obesity is at an all-time high, but I suspect that most people who read this magazine know this already. I'm heartened, however, to hear about a chain such as O'Naturals, which seems to have started out with a commitment to healthy options for vegetarians instead of being forced to back-peddle into it because of consumer trends.

I was extremely happy to see the BK Veggie pictured in the September 2003 issue. Although Burger King is not as compassionate and health-conscious as vegetarians would like it to be, it is important that we support its efforts to offer healthier, more humane fare. By adding the BK Veggie to its menu, Burger King is showing skeptics that vegetarian food is delicious and mainstream, and it is paving the way for other fast food restaurants to offer more plant-based options. Vegans can enjoy the burger with ketchup and mustard instead of mayo, cutting down on fat, calories and cholesterol--and making the BK Veggie truly animal-friendly.

In the September issue's article "Fast Food," one particular section, "On the Road Again," mentioned the Caesar salad was McDonald's only meatless salad. There was also a mention of Newman's Own dressing being used. I am under the impression that Newman's Own Caesar dressing contains anchovy paste--is that a mistake? On the same note, is there any Caesar dressing that does not contain anchovies?

Newman's Own Caesar dressing does include anchovy paste. As a tasty substitute, we recommend Follow Your Heart Fresh & Natural Caesar Dressing, available at your local natural foods or grocery store. Or contact the company (www.followyourheart.com or 818.348.3240) to place an order.
