Dairy dilemma
Vegetarian Times, March, 2004 by Katrelya Angus
Regarding "Get Milk" in the January 2004 issue: Studies have shown that milk is a natural antacid. Hydrochloric acid in the stomach is essential for the metabolism of calcium; hence, while milk has plenty of calcium, it might not be the best source. Anyone wishing to give up milk ought to ask his or her physician about plant sources of calcium, especially dark green leafy vegetables.
Those wishing to give up milk also might consider giving up soda, as I did. The calcium present in the body is needed to break down soda; soda takes calcium away from our bodies. Furthermore, many sodas contain animal-tested ingredients. The best drink for those who wish to abstain from milk is the drink that doctors recommend most--plain, wholesome water.
