Can't-miss cookbooks: we asked readers to tell us about their favorite cookbooks

Vegetarian Times,  June, 2004  by Hyacinthe L. Raven

I have three cookbooks that I can't live without: Tassajara Cooking and The Tassajara Bread Book, both by Edward Espe Brown, and Lord Krishna's Cuisine: The Art of Indian Vegetarian Cooking by Yamuna Devi. I bought Devi's book to appease a boyfriend who loved Indian cuisine, but it's become my most-used book. Coming from a meat-and-potatoes family, I had a hard time adjusting to a vegetarian diet, but once I discovered Indian cuisine, it was a breeze. The ingredients are low-fat but filling, and they're tastier than anything I've ever eaten.

As for the Brown books, they were a chance find at a rummage sale long before I even knew the joy of cooking or Buddhism. The best 25 cents I've ever spent! Brown's recipes AND reflections have fed me for years now. I'm all the better for it.
