D-ficiency

Vegetarian Times,  June, 2004

A University of Melbourne study in the November 2003 Journal of the American Geriatrics Society found that 22 percent of hostel residents and 45 percent of nursing home residents in Australia suffer from vitamin D deficiency, linked to falls and injuries. Unfortunately, many young women in regions of the United States where there is little winter sunlight are not getting enough vitamin D during puberty, when bone mass is developing.

A University of Maine study, presented in 2003 to the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research, has determined that almost 50 percent of girls in the Bangor, Maine, area may suffer from deficiencies in vitamin D during March because of inadequate diet or lack of exposure to the sun. In sunny September, when blood levels of the nutrient should be highest, about 17 percent still showed deficiencies.
