Scary

Vegetarian Times,  July-August, 2004

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has found that a cancer-causing substance previously found in fried potatoes and other starchy foods prepared at high temperatures is also present in other foods, though how much of a danger it poses no one knows. The substance, called acrylamide, has been discovered in black olives, bottled prune juice, arrowroot cookies and teething biscuits, which are often given to small children.

Fresh fruits and vegetables are free of the substance, and the FDA continues to study the issue, according to a statement released in March 2004.
