Chefs on TV cooking shows are lousy role models, says a study conducted by Toronto's University of Guelph-Humber, published in the May 2004 issue of Food Protection Trends. The researchers found that the chefs didn't wash fruits and vegetables, added ingredients with spoons that had been used for tasting and even used food that had fallen onto the floor.

The blunders were made by cooks on TV shows produced in the US, the United Kingdom and Canada. The mistakes are especially troublesome as "numerous studies demonstrate that TV is one of the primary sources" from which North American home cooks learn how to prepare food.
