Making the grade, one lunch at a time
Vegetarian Times, Nov-Dec, 2004
For serving nutritious lunches and promoting good health in kids, the school systems in San Diego, Detroit and Fairfax County, Virginia, go to the head of the class, according to the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. The nonprofit group analyzed the nutritional quality of elementary school lunches served in districts participating in the USDA's National School Lunch Program (NSLP).
The NSLP serves more than 28 million lunches a day at schools and childcare institutions nationwide. At the bottom of the class: Maryland's Baltimore County earned a "D," and Albuquerque, New Mexico, failed with an "F."
