Hungry? In a hurry?

Vegetarian Times,  Nov-Dec, 2004

VT put five new frozen foods to the taste test. Here's what we though:

Not Just a Garden-Variety Meal

Herb Grilled "Chicken" with Vegetables from Gardenburger. The "chicken" was a bit stringy, but the sauce and veggies tasted fresh and crisp ($3.49). 800.459.7079; www.gardenburger.com

Zesty Veggies

Santa Fe Vegetable Burgers from Vegelicious. Nice flavor, though not Southwest-spicy. We liked them cooked in the oven--crisper and more "burger"-like than in the microwave ($3.49). 800.287.2279; www.vegeliciousfoods.com

Put It in a Pocket, Please

Handi-Pie Heat & Eat Sandwich from Veg Time. These vegan pockets are made with 70 percent organic ingredients. Our lave flavor: Indian Curry. Milder palates might prefer the Thai ($3.99). 415.921.8925; www.vegtime.com

A Microwavable Fiesta

Enchilada Dinners from Amy's. We liked both types: bean-and-cheese and cheese-only. Each has sides of corn or rice and beans; both make a quite satisfying meal ($3.79). 707.578.7188; www.amys.com

For Future Paleontologists

Meatless Chick'n Nuggets from Veggie Patch. We found these a bit plain for our taste--meaning they're probably perfect for most kids. They're easy to make, come in fun dinosaur shapes and go well with sauces ($3.49). 888.MYVEGGIES; www.veggiepatch.com
