Brochures and books

Vegetarian Times,  Jan, 2005  by Samantha Tannich,  A. Wilson

I was a sophomore in high school when a friend showed me a PETA brochure and I learned about the horrors of factory farming. The conditions the animals are subjected to are inhumane. Consider family pets: They have their own beds, go for rides in cars, get kisses on their heads and are treated like humans. And why not? They deserve no less. The fact that people can treat their family pets so kindly but be OK with other animals being treated so awfully, not to mention consumed as a "product," is beyond me.

Back in my teens (1970s), going meatless was the "Earth-friendly lifestyle," and it seemed like the right thing to do. As an adult in the 1980s, I returned to eating meat. However, once I became aware of factory farms, I became a vegetarian again. I highly recommend Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser to anyone who is vacillating between vegetarianism and meat eating.
