Bone up early

The years 8-13 are when female bone growth peaks. So the time to prevent osteoporosis--a disease associated with old age--is before puberty, says Velimir Matkovic, MD, director of Ohio State University's Bone and Mineral Metabolism Laboratory. Girls need about 1,300 milligrams (mg) of calcium per day, according to Matkovic, whose research--the first clinical study of the effect of calcium on pre-adolescent girls--appears in the January 2005 issue of The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
That's the amount in about four 8-ounce glasses of milk or calcium-fortified OJ. "The time of the pre-adolescent growth spurt is also when young women are most likely to prefer soft drinks to healthier choices," Matkovic tells VT.
