Animal agriculture--already the world's largest user of land threatens to consume even more of the world's acreage as Asian countries shift from their traditional plant-based diets to Westernized meat-based ones. But this land won't be used for grazing, the December 9, 2005 issue of the journal Science reports.

It will be used to grow feed crops for cattle, hogs and poultry confined in concentrated animal feeding operations. As the world's population adopts a Western diet, researchers from Stanford University's Center for Environmental Science and Policy predict that over 6 billion acres--two-thirds more than presently used for livestock farming--will be needed.
