Breathless burgers

Vegetarian Times,  April, 2006

Children who eat fast food hamburgers even once a week are 75 percent more likely to develop asthma than children who eat none, found researchers at New Zealand's Wellington Medical School. Kids who eat burgers are also 100 percent more likely to experience wheezing problems, say the scientists, who studied the diets of more than 1,300 children aged 10 to 12.

The researchers, whose findings appeared in the December 2005 issue of Allergy, did not determine a cause for the increased risk of respiratory problems. But they speculate that the high salt content of fast food burgers may be connected.
