Some vitamins aren't vital after all

Vegetarian Times,  March, 2007

Antioxidants are constantly in the news for their natural healing powers, but a study presented at a November 2006 meeting of the American Heart Association shows that in vitamin form, they may have little or no effect on cardiovascular disease (CVD). In the study, women ages 40 or over with histories of heart problems or a combination of risk factors gained no heart health benefits from vitamin C, vitamin E or beta-carotene (which the body converts to vitamin A) supplements.

But the news wasn't all bad: Vitamins C and E did show a reduced risk for stroke in women who had three or more CVD risk factors, according to lead study author JoAnn Manson, MD, DrPH, chief of preventive medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.
