Every time someone buys a pack of cigarettes, another $7.18 is added to the government's tax bill to cover medical costs and lost productivity. About 22 billion packs of cigarettes are sold in the United States each year, and the smokers who purchase these incur $157 million in health-related economic costs. Another way to compute America's medical bill for cigarette smoking: $3,391 per smoker per year.
