Two physician executives whose influence and leadership enrich the world of health care were honored with awards at the ACPE Spring Institute in New York - ACPE News - Brief Article

Physician Executive, May-June, 2003

Max Cohen, MD, won the fifth annual Physician Executive Award of Excellence and Harris Berman, MD, was given the first Physician Executive Lifetime Achievement Award.

Cohen, vice president and CMO of Missouri Baptist Medical Center in St. Louis, is a proponent and organizer of quality and safety programs. He has fostered a culture of uninhibited error reporting and led a safety team that saw adverse drug events drop from 2.5 to less than 0.5 per 1,000 doses each year.

Berman, CEO of the Tufts Health Plan in Boston, took charge of Tufts in 1986 and immediately began making changes. The HMO grew from 60,000 enrollees to more than 900,000 and was one of the first HMOs to offer preventative health benefits such as fitness center memberships, smoking cessation programs and nutrition classes.

ACPE congratulates these physician executives on their many achievements.

The awards are sponsored by Modern Physician magazine, Cerner Corporation and ACPE.
