In a half-hour audio lecture, Tim Keogh, PhD, professor at Tulane University, provides helpful tips on how to give negative feedback. Here are a few examples:

Negative feedback should be given in a respectful manner close to the time of the event. Privately, in your office, describe the one behavior that is unacceptable and the desired change.

Begin by asking--have you had a chance to look over the information I sent you describing what we are going to talk about? The only acceptable answer is yes.
