Officers of the college and three new ACPE board members were chosen at April's Spring Institute in Las Vegas

Physician Executive, July-August, 2004

Marvin Kolb, MD, MS, FAAP, CPE, FACPE, is the president of the College for 2004/2005. Kolb, of Bakersfield, Calif., is chief medical officer of Kern Medical Center. He has 19 years of experience as a practicing pediatrician and 16 years experience as a physician executive. Kolb has held positions at local, regional and national levels that have enhanced the direction of physician executives in health care administration and policy. Some of the leadership roles were in the American Academy of Pediatrics, National Association of Children's Hospitals, National Association of Public Hospitals, Great Plains Organization for Perinatal Healthcare and the American Hospital Association's National Quality Leadership Team.

Barry Silbaugh, MD, MS, FACPE, is the new vice president of the College. Silbaugh is vice president, medical operations for Denver-based Catholic Health Initiatives, which operates 64 acute care facilities in 19 states, and employs nearly 70,000 people. His accountabilities include implementing systemic quality and patient safety activities and providing medical management for several hospitals. He has a background in private group practice and served as medical director of New Mexico Blue Cross and Blue Shield. Board certified by the American Boards of Internal Medicine and Medical Management, he completed his Masters in Administrative Medicine from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1995.

Chalmers Nunn, MD, MMM, CPE, FACPE, is the new secretary/treasurer of the College. Since September of 1999, Nunn has been senior vice president and chief medical officer of Centra Health in Lynchburg, Virginia. He is a nationally recognized leader in quality improvement and clinical effectiveness, as well as medical staff development and management. Dr. Nunn has direct responsibility for health information, pharmacy, medical staff office, decision support, clinical informatics, clinical effectiveness, infection control, and quality support services. Nunn practiced internal medicine and gastroenterology in a large multispecialty clinic in Rocky Mount, N.C. from 1985 to 1993. He served in a leadership position and helped grow the practice from 12 to 45 physicians. From 1994 to 1999, he was senior vice president and chief medical officer at Nash Health Care Systems in Rocky Mount, N.C.

Gregg A. Pane, MD, MPA, CPE, FACPE, will serve a three-year term on the College's Board of Directors. Pane is system vice president for quality and public policy at Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, Michigan. Previously he served as chief policy and planning officer at the Veterans Health Administration headquarters, and vice president and chief medical officer at Unisys Health Information Management. He earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan, a Master's in Public Administration from the University of San Francisco and completed a residency in emergency medicine at Wright State University.

Michael Patmas, MD, MMM, FACP, CPE, FACPE, will serve a three-year term on the College's Board of Directors. Patmas is director of the Providence Ambulatory Care and Education Center in Portland, Ore., a member of the general internal medicine faculty at Providence Medical Center and a clinical assistant professor at Oregon Health Science University. He earned his medical degree from the University of Nevada School of Medicine and a Master's in Medical Management from the University of Southern California--Marshall School of Business.

Cynthia Sherry, MD, MMM, FACR, CPE, FACPE, will serve a three-year term on the College's Board of Directors. Sherry is president of Southwest Imaging and Interventional Specialists in Dallas, Texas, and co-owner and managing partner of Southwest Diagnostic Imaging Center. The center's primary hospital affiliation is Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas where Sherry served on the hospital board as president of the medical staff and has recently been elected chairman for the department of radiology. She earned her medical degree from University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas and her Master's in Medical Management from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.
