Jon Cohen

Physician Executive, Sept-Oct, 2005

Jon Cohen, MD, chief medical officer at The North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System is running for New York State lieutenant governor. "After much discussion, thought and soul searching I have decided to run to become the next lieutenant governor of the State of New York," Cohen said. "The reason is simple; the health care system is dysfunctional. This crisis of quality, cost and access is impacting on every low- and middle-class family, every small business, every large business, every hospital, every local county and just about every person who becomes ill and attempts to navigate through the system. It is the social problem of our generation and it is time to fix it." Cohen is a nationally recognized health care executive who has published over 100 peer review articles, two books and multiple book chapters. He is past president of both the New York Surgical Society and the New York Society for Cardiovascular Surgery, a prior Chairman of Surgery at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center and a member of the Society of University Surgeons and the American Surgical Association. His surgical residency was at the New York Hospital Cornell Medical Center, followed by vascular surgery training at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School. Cohen, a lifelong New Yorker, grew up in Queens, and attended the New York City public school system. As chief medical officer, Cohen is the health system's senior physician and is responsible for overall professional management of the clinical, education, research and quality of care issues related to all medical and clinical affairs of the health system.
