Good ways to stand your ground - Shape Your Life
Shape, June, 2003 by Maureen Kennedy
Have trouble saying no? Here's some advice from Pinole, Calif.-based communications consultant Susan Christy, Ph.D.:
1. Avoid inflammatory words like no, can't or won't. A simple "I'd love to, but ..." can help defuse charged emotions.
2. Focus on what you can do. Accentuate the positive.
3. Watch your nonverbal cues. A smile or crossed arms may send either a wrong message or a mixed one.
4. Create positive images. Remembering a shared experience or past success can help soften any rejection the other person may feel.
