3 big-adventure hotels: whether you're scuba diving to your door or climbing to your treetop digs, these specialty lodges will provide a one-of-a-kind experience

Shape,  June, 2008  by Marissa Stephenson

* ASHFORD, WASHINGTON CEDAR CREEK TREEHOUSE

This lofty cottage, equipped with a bathroom, kitchen, and bedroom, is perfect for relaxing--not to mention stargazing. Guests can also climb a nearby spiral staircase to a glass-walled observation tower for 360-degree views of Mount Rainier. Call at least six months in advance for a reservation (from $300 per couple, $50 for each additional guest; cedarcreektreehouse.com).

* KEY LARGO, FLORIDA JULES' UNDERSEA LODGE

Guests scuba dive 21 feet to the ocean floor to check into this hotel. Inside you'll get B & B amenities--hot showers, a stocked pantry, comfy beds--but with 42-inch windows to watch angelfish and barracuda swim by. The lodge sleeps up to six people. If you're not a certified diver, you'll be required to take Jules' scuba class to book a reservation (from $375 per person, including dinner and breakfast; jul.com).

* FARMINGTON, NEW MEXICO KOKOPELLI'S CAVE

Carved into the side of a sandstone cliff, this hideaway's luxe touches include a waterfall-style shower and rustic fireplace. Guests making the 70-foot hike down to its door will see Ship Rock Mountain to the west and the San Juan Mountains to the north. The one-bedroom cave is open March through November (from $240 per couple; bbonline.com/nm/kokopelli).
