Miss manners goes to exercise class - Get Fit

Shape, July, 2002 by Robin Tolkar

When some people walk into an exercise class, everything they've ever learned about manners flies out the window. But it's just as important to practice etiquette as it is to maintain good form. The next time you take a class:

Don't take what's not yours. When someone runs out to use the bathroom or get a drink, that doesn't mean it's OK to snag her spot. Remember that silence is golden. An exercise class is a place to work your body, not your mouth. And leave your cell phone in the car. Speak up for yourself. If someone stands directly in front of you, ask her politely to scoot over. Saying something like "Would you mind? I wouldn't want to accidentally kick you" usually works well.
