Strength-training etiquette

For newcomers in particular, the atmosphere in many gyms can be intimidating, especially if you forgo the machines for free weights. Here are some rules of the road to make the experience more pleasant:
* Share and share alike.
Many people monopolize space, staking their claim with a water bottle while they cross the gym to work on a different body part. Feel free to ask, "Can I work in?" if someone is hogging an area or machine and interfering with your routine.
* Rack your weights. The mantra is "If you can lift it, you can put it away." Always put bars and dumbbells back in their proper place, and remove weight plates from machines when you've finished your sets.
* Tote a towel. Wipe down equipment after you're through using it, even if you don't see any sweat.
* Don't monopolize the mirror. It's an unspoken rule to not block the view of someone who's scrutinizing his or her form in a mirror. If there's nowhere else to go, ask nicely if that person minds sharing the space.
