Burn calories on your couch - running special

Shape, Sept, 2003 by Michelle Gagnon

The Eloton SimCycle gives you a stationary-bike workout without the cost or hassle of owning a hefty machine. Plug the SimCycle into a computer port, download the accompanying software onto your hard drive, then take an interactive ride. For $99.75 you get the SimCycle, which stores easily under a bed or desk. The Gamebox, which enables you to control video games such as NASCAR or Quake by pedaling, is an additional $50.

If games aren't your thing, the Eloton software offers seven simulated environments for you to ride through, ranging from the Sierra foothills to the Sedona desert. Throughout your workout, the computer provides full stats, including miles pedaled and calories burned. If you prefer to ride from the comfort of your couch, Ironman triathlete Lauren Krause's 10-, 20-, 30--and 40-minute videos will guide you through a full cycling workout. One drawback: The SimCycle is so light, it doesn't have the feel of a regular bike and sometimes slides around if not properly braced. For information: eloton.com or (866) 356-8661.
