Advice for spa virgins

Shape,  Sept, 2004  by Sharon Cohen

Up to 40 percent of spa gift certificates go unused, says Gordon Tareta, director of spa operations for Hyatt, often because potential spa-goers simply don't know what to expect from a treatment, especially a massage. To prep you for your visit, here are answers to some frequently asked questions:

Q Will I have to be naked?

A During a massage, only the body part being worked on will be uncovered, but you can keep your underwear on. During treatments such as Watsu, a hydrotherapy bath accompanied by an underwater massage, you'll wear a bathing suit.

Q Can I choose a male or female massage therapist?

A Yes, but ask ahead to be sure your preference is available.

Q What if I'm uncomfortable during the treatment?

A Tell the person who's giving it; he or she should respond immediately to your concern.

Q Do I leave a tip?

A Spa-treatment fees sometimes include a tip (ask when you book). If not, request an envelope in which you can leave a gratuity. Fifteen percent is standard.--F.K.
