Topic: RSS FeedEffortless evening style: sometimes all it takes to look pulled together is one key piece

Q It's still warm during the day, but the nights are getting cooler. What type of coverup should I buy?
A Less bulky than a coat but more versatile than a structured jacket, a loose-fitting cardigan is the perfect partner for a lightweight party dress when the sun goes down. Another chill-chasing day-to-evening option: a wrap cardigan, which works equally well over a casual summer shift or an office-worthy shirt-and-trouser combo. To ease the transition into fall, invest in luxurious, season-spanning cashmere in classic shades like chocolate, navy, charcoal, and plum.
Q Sometimes I just want to pull my hair back. How can I dress it up?
A Hair accessories are the easiest way to look instantly polished. "Headbands work especially well if you have a layered style or are growing out bangs," says Renee Cohen, a senior stylist at Serge Normant at John Frieda salon in New York. Going out? Just gather your hair into a low ponytail and slip a sparkly pin behind one ear. For a fuss-free daytime look, tie a printed scarf around your ponytail elastic to add a splash of color.
Q I'm not into wearing lots of jewelry, but my evening outfits could use some pizzazz. What's one item that can make a big impact?
A "A jewelry-inspired watch is sometimes all the adornment you need," says New York--based celebrity stylist Christina Ruiz. But don't think you'll need to shell out big bucks for one; elegant timepieces can be found in all price ranges. Your best bet for evening: one of the season's more delicate bracelet or chain-link band styles in silver or gold. Silver tones complement cooler shades like gray, black, and white, while gold is a natural with warmer hues.
