Light up the night

Shape,  Oct, 2004

As you get set to turn the clocks back for fall, protect yourself during post-sunset exercise with high-visibility, reflective gear and clothing. Perfect for that jog in the fog or an evening bike ride, these pieces will make sure you're seen--and safe.

1. Get an allover glow with the illumiNITE Adventure Long-Sleeved Shirt ($40; illuminite.com), featuring a patented retro-reflective technology that's been applied to the fabric.

2. Asics 3M retro-reflective "Slap" bands ($10 for two; asicsamerica.com) are affordable reflectors you can wear with anything, anytime. Put the bands over fitted apparel--or wrap them on wrists or ankles; they instantly adjust to a comfortable size without constricting.

3. A possibility of showers? You can still head outside with Marmot's lightweight stretch nylon/polyamide "Rim" jacket ($180; marmot.com). This slick, waterproof (yet breathable) jacket features reflective tape on the hood, collar and sleeves, as well as seam welding, a zip-stash storm hood and elastic drawcord hem.

4. The Indiglo night light isn't the only thing that brightens up the water-resistant Timex Shock Ironman Triathlon 30 Lap watch ($50; timex.com); it also has 3M Scotchlite reflective insets on the wristband.

5. With reflectors placed in high-motion areas--like calves and thighs--for 360-degree visibility, you won't be missed in Pearl Izumi's "Flash" tight ($80; www.pearlizumi.com). The ultracomfortable nylon/polyester/Lycra-blend Therma Fleece fabric offers supreme moisture-wicking as well as durability and warmth.
