The healthier red meat

Shape, Oct, 2004 by Carol Potera

the healthier red meat Love red meat but fear its saturated fat? Try wild game. The meat of such animals as deer (venison), elk or antelope contains the same heart-healthy omega-3 fats as haddock, swordfish and flounder (though only about one-third as much as salmon), and has two to three times less saturated fat than does grain-fed beef.

Just watch out for sausage or burgers made from wild game: Beef fat has been added to make them tastier. "When in doubt, choose [wild game] steaks and roasts," says Loren Cordain, Ph.D., a professor of health and exercise science at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. Game meat is available in specialty stores such as Whole Foods Market or Wild Oats.
