Condoms: good for more than just birth control
Shape, Oct, 2005 by Kathleen Doheny
Consistent condom use can help prevent repeated bouts of pelvic-inflammatory disease (PID), an infection that can cause pelvic pain and infertility, according to a new study in the American Journal of Public Health. Researcher Roberta Ness, M.D., M.P.H., and her team followed nearly 700 women with PID and found those whose partners used condoms regularly were half as likely to have a recurrence of PID and 60 percent less likely to become infertile.
Most cases of PID are triggered by the bacteria that cause gonorrhea and chlamydia, two very common sexually transmitted diseases.--K.D.
