B vitamins protect against cervical cancer - Think Healthy

Shape,  March, 2003  by Mary Ellen Strote

If you don't have enough folate and vitamin [B.sub.12] in your diet, normal cell activity in the cervix may be impaired, says Khursheed Jeejeebhoy, M.D., a professor of medicine and nutrition at the University of Toronto. And a [B.sub.12] deficiency may cause the papillomavirus to linger in the cervix -- a condition known to be the main cause of cervical cancer.

Folate is found in fruits, dark-green leafy vegetables, dried beans and peas, and in folic-acid-fortified grain products and breakfast cereals. [B.sub.12] is found in meats, fish, eggs, milk and milk roducts; vegetarians or vegans who do not eat any of these foods are at higher risk for deficiency. And some studies are finding that [B.sub.12] levels are marginal in many more Americans than once believed, even among people who eat animal products.
