As the founding publisher of Weider Health & Fitness, Joe Weider has been a pioneer in fitness since 1940, when, at age 17, he launched Your Physique from the basement of his parents' home in Montreal, Canada. The publication was the first to bring health and fitness consciousness to the general public and spawned a magazine empire that today includes Fit Pregnancy, Muscle & Fitness, Muscle & Fitness Hers, Men's Fitness, Flex, Natural Health and Shape, which Mr. Weider founded in 1981. His wife, Betty, who is also a leading fitness advocate, was the inspiration behind Shape, believing women deserved a publication devoted to helping them achieve healthier and happier lives.

To create the vision and establish the editorial direction of Shape, the Weiders hired the late Christine MacIntyre (bottom photo), an instructor at UCLA and Pasadena City College. As editor in chief, MacIntyre was Shape's guiding force until her untimely death in September 1987. The deeply rooted commitment and unyielding passion for spreading the message of healthy living shared by MacIntyre and the Weiders is still reflected in every page of Shape, whose mission is to help women create better lives through fitness of mind, body and spirit.
